Cataract still is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide while cataract surgery genetally is one the most common surgical procedures in medicine. Therefore, there is continuous need of developing novel and modern surgical techniques and methods of cataract removal in order to achieve optimal visual acuity and picture quality, i.e., the best possible vision. The current era of cataract removal by femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and phacoemulsification greatly differs from previous intracapsular and extracapsular extraction procedures.
We are daily witnessing improvements in the fields of diagnostics, instrumentarium, microscopes, surgical methods, intraocular lenses, ophthalmic viscosurgical devices, and other equipment, as well as the research related to current cataract surgery. All these prompted the need of such a handbook summarizing movelties in this highly dynamic ophthalmology area while supplementing basic information on cataract surgery.
